The Mirror – the system, captured without interpretation
Formally, everything works. It just no longer adds up.
The numbers hold. The board meets. The team is in place. But decisions have slowed, and the founder carries more than the role requires.
The Mirror is the state in which a system becomes visible to itself. We capture how the company operates today: where decisions are made, where they stall, what is held together by people, and what by form. No recommendations. No action steps. The decision stays yours, taken from a different vantage point.
What follows is one of two things. Nothing needs to change. Or everything does.
When The Mirror is the right state
A portfolio company within its investment thesis. Or a company its founder is preparing to hand over, to a successor or to a management team. Operationally, nothing is on fire.
And yet: the speed of decisions has dropped, and you cannot say where. Two or three people hold everything together. The declared structure does not match how things actually move. The founder or the CEO is unblocking more often than leading.
You see no formal risks. You also have no confidence that the company will hold through the next phase, whether that phase is a new round, a transition or an exit.
That is the state The Mirror is built for. Not a crisis. A company that still works and no longer adds up.
What we read
We go inside and capture the company as it holds together today.
Where decisions are actually made, and by whom. Not the org chart. The real path a decision travels before it becomes action.
Where decisions stall or dissolve. The committee that never concludes, the approval that nobody owns, the topic that keeps returning to the agenda.
What rests on one person. The dependencies everyone recognises and nobody has named.
Where there is a team without structure, and structure without a team. Functions that exist on paper, and functions that exist in practice.
Where what is said and what is done diverge. What the company declares about itself, and what it does when a plan stops working.
What The Mirror is not
It is not a process audit. We do not benchmark your operations against a standard.
It is not an assessment of people. Nobody is scored, ranked or profiled, and nothing anyone tells us is used to evaluate the person who said it.
It is not a culture diagnostic. We do not survey the organisation.
It is not a plan. There are no recommendations, no action steps, no roadmap at the end. We do not leave you with a problem. We leave you with a clear view of it, and the decision stays where it belongs, with you.
Format
Three to four weeks.
Conversations with the owner, the board and the second level of management. A reading of the documents and of the actual decision flows: who signs, who is consulted, what happens when the two disagree. The company keeps operating; we read it while it does.
One of Createria's managing partners does the work personally. The same person you spoke to at the start, with no hand-off to a project team, no analysts, no questionnaires, no workshops.
Confidentiality is a condition of the reading, not a clause. Before the first interview we agree who receives the document and how individual conversations may be used. What one person tells us is used to read the system and is never quoted back to anyone, and the document goes to no one outside the circle agreed at the start.
What you receive
One document. The system, read without interpretation.
It names where decisions live and where they get lost, what rests on one person, where form and team have come apart, and where what is declared and what is done no longer match.
The document keeps three things apart: what we observed, what people told us and what the partner concludes from both. You always know which is which.
It does not tell you what to do. It shows you, precisely, what you are deciding about.
Most owners recognise every line. What is new is seeing them on one page, in relation to each other, with nothing between you and the page that you cannot see.
Two answers, both of them legitimate
Nothing essential needs to change. The reading confirms that the company holds. You continue with that confidence rather than with a suspicion, and, if you want to keep it, the reading can be repeated as the company moves through its next events.
The weak points are now visible. The decisions they demand are taken consciously instead of by inertia: a decision that has been postponed goes to the room where it can no longer be postponed; a missing person goes to a search that starts from the shape of the role, not from a job description.
The Mirror never produces the decision. It removes the possibility of not seeing it.
How it starts
The Mirror does not begin with a proposal. It begins with one conversation, 45 to 60 minutes, with one of our managing partners. No deck, no diagnostic form.
We check whether your company has the kind of situation we work with, and whether you are ready to see it without interpretation. You check whether our way of working is compatible with yours. If we do not see the point, we will say so plainly, with one sentence on why.
Free, with no obligation on either side. And no follow-up from us: if you do not write after the conversation, that is an answer too.
The Mirror changes nothing. It makes change inevitable, if it is truly needed. Start the conversation, or see who will be in the room.
